Trip to Berlin
September 11-13, 2020
One of the most outstanding events of our GRADE-Excursions is a three-day trip to Berlin. Between 11 and 13 September, we will visit some of the numerous important historical and cultural places of the city. We will gain a deeper insight into German-German history as well as into Berlin's multicultural life. There will be time to visit some landmarks of the city like the Reichstag building, Brandenburg Gate and Museum Island, but we’ll also make sure to just enjoy a nice evening in one of the city’s parks or the Berlin nigthlife.
Main Cruise - Frankfurt by Boat

As part of our tour of cultural and historical sites, we’d like to invite you to a cruise on the river Main. The tour will start at “Eiserner Steg” in the citycenter and will lead us past the picturesque banks of the river Main and the stunning sight of the ECB. After a detour through the Frankfurt Osthafen, thes hip will make a turn in front of the historic Gerbermühle and we’ll sail back towards Frankfurt along the Museumsufer to the Westhafen/Schleuse Griesheim. As we relax with a coffee and cake or cold beer, we’ll get to enjoy a fantastic view of the skyline. The trip will be commentated in German and English and its duration will be approx. 100 min. During the trip you'll be asked to wear mouth-and-nose protection.
The Satellite KZ Walldorf
June 30, 2020
In 1972, during a study trip to the Buchenwald KZ memorial place, three young men from Mörfelden-Walldorf discovered a map showing all satellite KZs. They were shocked to read the name of their ownhome town there: Walldorf. There, in this piece of woodlands, a satellite camp of the KZ Natzweiler had existed from August to November/December 1944. 1.700 young Jewish women from Hungary had beenput up in shacks. They were supposed to build the first concrete-covered runway of Frankfurt airport. This construction project was “vital for warfare” according to the German “Luftwaffe”. In town, manyweren't excited about this new knowledge. In the seventies, many felt that the work the young men haddone was “fouling their own nest”.
During a guided tour (English) we will get to know the grounds of the former satellite KZ and theHorváth-Center. Most of the tour takes place outdoors and you'll be asked to wear mouth-and-noseprotection for the duration.
"Open Space" via online streaming
May 26, 2020
Dear doctoral candidates and postdocs:
The global crisis we are currently experiencing has changed much of what was previously taken for granted. While some found this as an opportunity to be particularly productive, others are facing problems that hardly allow them to work on their projects. We would like to offer you the opportunity to exchange experiences about the new situation; likewise, we encourage you to ask questions and break the routine in a two-hour "Open Space" via stream in a nice and informal setting.
