After studying life sciences and finishing a PhD most of us face the reality of “What the heck do I do now?”. Career fairs and PhD programs provide more and more ideas what to do next but often it is not clear what industry jobs really are about.
Medical Affairs is rather young function in pharmaceutical companies and is still developing and shaping. In short Medical Affairs provides the non-sales connection to Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Patient Organizations and the connection to Clinical Research, but also provides medical expertise inside the company to other functions. In this career talk I would like to give you an idea what Medical Affairs jobs there are in the pharmaceutical industry, how a normal week is looking like for office based and field based roles, how I came to Medical Affairs and what skills are helpful to get you there.
Since Medical Affairs is an integrative function in most pharma companies, I can also provide you some side views on what my colleagues in e.g. Marketing & Sales, Compliance, Market Access and Regulatory Affairs are doing if you are interested in these functions.
Dr. Claus Schuh studied Biology at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern in Germany before doing his PhD on “Prostanoids in central and peripheral pain processing” at Gerd Geisslinger‘s Institute of Clinical Pharmacology of the University Hospital Frankfurt in the group of Klaus Scholich. Afterwards, he worked six years as a Postdoc at the Institute of Anatomy of the University of Zurich (UZH) establishing and developing in vivo renal Multiphoton Imaging in the mouse. After a short project as coordinator for clinical studies at the University Hospital Zurich he joined Sandoz/Novartis Switzerland as Medical Scientific Liaison/ Medical Advisor in July 2020. In 2023 he joined GSK in Switzerland as field based MSL.

In diesem Workshop behandeln wir keine fachlichen Themen, sondern schauen uns an, wie ein Unternehmen ganz grundsätzlich funktioniert.
Diese Informationen geben Ihnen Sicherheit und Orientierung im Bewerbungsprozess und helfen Ihnen dabei, sich in einem Unternehmen schneller zurecht zu finden. Im Rahmen des Workshops können wir Ihre konkreten Fragen behandeln und konkrete Bewerbungsideen diskutieren.
Petra Becker-Horn, Bo-Ho Consulting, hat über 30 Jahre Erfahrung in verschiedenen Unternehmen in unterschiedlichsten Branchen und in unterschiedlichsten Rollen. Sie hat als Mitarbeiterin, Controllerin, Führungskraft, Projektmanagerin, Organisationsentwicklerin und externe Beraterin gearbeitet und dadurch einen tiefen Einblick in die Strukturen und die Kultur von Wirtschaftsunternehmen.

Dr. Theresa Gimbel studied Biomolecular Engineering (B.Sc. & M.Sc.) at TU Darmstadt specializing in RNA biochemistry, genetics and molecular biology.
She continued her academic career with a PhD at the Institute of Cardiovascular Regeneration in the group of Prof. Dr. Reinier Boon (Goethe University Frankfurt) with the focus on the role of non-coding RNAs in age-related processes in the vasculature.
After finishing her PhD in 2022, Theresa switched to the pharmaceutical industry and joined the team of quality assurance manager in the insulin production at Sanofi.
Theresa will share the experiences she made throughout her transition to industry and talk about her daily tasks in quality management.
GRADE BioMed FIRST Career Talk: Dr. Ivan Krstic, Director of Marketing at Elsevier Life Sciences, on development of software for chemists in pharma and academia & the transition from academia to a non-academic career

Dr. Ivan Krstic studied chemistry in Belgrade and earned his PhD at Goethe-University in the Prisner lab. He stayed on as a postdoc for two years before deciding to join Elsevier as a Customer Support Specialist. Ten years later, he now serves as Senior Director of Marketing in Elsevier Life Sciences, leading a team of ten product marketers responsible for understanding the needs of researchers in pharma, developing global marketing strategy and plans, creating value propositions, product positioning, messaging content, and enabling sales and other teams to tell the story. His previous role was Director of Product Management and Head of Chemistry Solutions, where he was responsible for business growth, strategy development, roadmap execution, and overall product management of Reaxys. Ivan and his team work closely with pharma customers to help them solve challenges in early drug discovery and lead optimization, as well as pharmacovigilance, using Elsevier's chemistry software Reaxys, biomedical solution Embase, and others.
What he enjoys a lot is being in constant contact with researchers at different stages of their careers and helping them solve their scientific and career problems. The transition from PhD/postdoc to a non-academic career has piqued his interest, and he has given several presentations and workshops on this topic, including at his former research group and universities worldwide. He is happy to share his knowledge and experience at Elsevier and address some of the challenges and fears he has noticed, even among successful senior scientists at large companies or universities.
This Career Talk will focus on chemists, biologists, and pharmacists, as these are the areas covered by his life science unit, but others are also very welcome.
Dr. Stephanie Ley: 12 years in Quality for Vaccines Manufacturing – 5 different roles and 2 kids

After studying Pharmacy in Mainz and Dijon, Dr. Stephanie Ley performed a 6-months research internship at the Cancer Center of the University of Arizona and afterwards joined a PhD program at the Pathobiochemistry Institute of Prof. Brüne at the University Hospital Frankfurt in cooperation with a Dutch Biotech company, where she spent 7 months performing a high-throughput screen on primary cell cultures. In 2012 she completed her PhD on “Macrophage polarization by apoptotic cancer cells - a RNAi high-throughput screen and validation of interleukin 10 regulation”.
After completion of her PhD, she decided to leave the research field and applied for various positions at different Pharmaceutical Companies. She was recruited by Novartis Vaccines (now GSK Vaccines) in Marburg and joined the company in 2012 as QA Manager Quality Release.
Over the next 12 year up to now, she held various positions within Vaccines Quality. Through a Vaccines Quality Leadership Development Program Stephanie worked for 1 year in Siena/Italy on QC Method Optimization Projects. Coming back from Italy she took over the Quality Assurance team responsible for 2 antigen production lines. Since starting a family, Stephanie works part-time as Project Manager, got IPMA-certified as PM and is currently leading the Documentation and Learning Transformation Program at the Marburg site, working together with global functions and sites across the globe.
Stephanie’s take home message: Stay curious and trust yourself. This in combination with logical thinking and an intrinsic positivity will get you wherever you choose.

Dr. Lena Hansen studierte von 2008 bis 2015 an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz Biologie (B.Sc.), Molekulare Biologie (B.Sc) und Biomedizin (M.Sc.). Anschließend promovierte sie in der Arbeitsgruppe von Dr. Waltraud Pfeilschifter am Universitätsklinikum Frankfurt über die Regulation der Blut-Hirn-Schranke durch Sphingolipid-Rezeptoren. Nach einer 4-monatigen fachlichen Weiterbildung im Bereich Qualitätsmanagement / Life Sciences Management Ende 2021 trat sie Anfang 2022 ihre aktuelle Position als Quality Compliance Managerin in der Histology Core Facility bei BioNTech an, in der sie nun die Durchführung innovativer klinischer Studien im Bereich der personalisierten Krebstherapie unterstützt.
Der Schwerpunkt ihres Vortrags liegt auf den typischen Aufgaben sowie dem Arbeitsalltag eines Quality Compliance Managers im GCLP-Bereich bei BioNTech. Zudem werden Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede in den Tätigkeitsbereichen von einerseits Labor-/Prüfleitern und andererseits Managern im Bereich der Qualitätssicherung (Quality Assurance & Quality Compliance) vorgestellt.
Das Karrieregespräch richtet sich in erster Linie an promovierende NaturwissenschaftlerInnen, die sich über Möglichkeiten für einen erfolgreichen Berufseinstieg in der Pharma/Biotech-Industrie ohne direkten Forschungsbezug informieren möchten.
