GRADE Initiative "Situational Analysis"
Aims of the GRADE Initiative
In this GRADE initiative, we are focussing on Situational Analysis by Adele E. Clarke et al. (see for example Clarke/Friese/Washburn 2017). As a further development of grounded theory, Situational Analysis (SitA) as a "theory-method package" combines the analysis of discourse and practices, agency and structure, image and text material. With reference to post-structuralist and pragmatist approaches, SitA offers a creative way of exploring, depicting and analysing social situations using different mapping methods and taking into account not only human but also non-human actors (e.g. bodies, artefacts, spaces). In the GRADE initiative, the participants exchange on the theoretical foundations as well as on the methodological approach to analysing situations of interest.
Literature relevant to the theoretical and conceptual foundation of situation analysis is read and discussed together. The participants' research projects will be used to try out Situational Analysis as an analytical tool. Open questions and the relationship of SitA to other methods of analysis and evaluation will be discussed as well.
Meetings and participation
The participants meet every 4-6 weeks on Fridays for two hours in a hybrid format. The responsibility and management of the meetings lies with different participants in turn. Sometimes Guest speakers are invited to give talks and workshops.
The GRADE initiative "Situational Analysis" is open to doctoral and post-doctoral students as well as advanced Master's students. This GRADE initiative is also open to English-speaking participants.
