GRADE Hadron and Ion Research
The Goethe Research Academy for Early Career Researchers (GRADE) Center for Hadron and Ion Research is based at the Helmholtz Graduate School for Hadron and Ion Research "HGS-HIRe for FAIR", a joint endeavor of the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, the universities of Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Giessen, Heidelberg and Mainz together with FIAS to promote and support structured doctoral training in the research fields of GSI and FAIR.
The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates a worldwide unique large-scale accelerator facility for heavy ions. The GSI-FAIR research program mainly focuses on basic research in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, atomic physics and plasma physics. In parallel, application-oriented research activities in materials research, biophysics and nuclear medicine are conducted.
To supply state-of-the-art facilities for scientific research, the accelerator and experimental facilities at GSI-FAIR are permanently being enhanced and improved. In the coming years, the new international accelerator complex FAIR, one of the largest research facilities worldwide, is under construction at GSI. At FAIR, an unprecedented variety of experiments are possible. Scientists from all over the world are able to gain new insight into the structure of matter and the evolution of the universe from the Big Bang to the present.
The GRADE Center for Hadron and Ion Research provides structured doctoral training for all doctoral students in the research fields of GSI and FAIR. To facilitate the training, participants have the right to participate in all HGS-HIRe events as e.g. lecture weeks, power weeks, soft skill seminars, graduate days, the perspectives events and they benefit from their HGS-HIRe travel budget. In addition they can apply for the HGS-HIRe abroad program. In return, participants agree
- to participate regularly in scientific HGS-HIRe education events (lecture week or power week) each year of participantship
- to participate in one HGS-HIRe soft skill event per year of participantship
- to hold a HGS-HIRe PhD committee meeting every six months
